Jobs - Postdoctoral Position in Mountain River Geomorphology and Sediment Transport, USA

The University of California, Davis invites applications for an immediate postdoctoral position to research mountain river geomorphology and sediment transport. Basic and applied research will be conducted on fluvial topographic variability, geomorphic change, hydraulics, and sediment transport in highly confined mountain canyons and in partially confined gravel/cobble rivers. Among others, one specific research application that will be addressed is sediment clogging behind mountain dams. The successful applicant will join a collaborative team including an experienced professor, an existing postdoctoral researcher and several graduate students, providing opportunities to both lead research and authorship as well as contribute as a co-author to other manuscripts. The research will be at the forefront of near-census fluvial geomorphology. After establishing research plan details, work activities will involve some field data collection, but primarily geospatial analysis of dense topographic point clouds with ArcGIS, LAStools, Python coding, and 2D hydrodynamic modeling with TUFLOW HPC. Some of these tasks will be facilitated by teamwork with students and colleagues. The successful candidate will interact with diverse researchers and stakeholders in academia and state agencies. Candidates must have a PhD in Physical Geography, Civil Engineering, Hydrology, Geology, Applied Math or related field. Experience and training with geospatial analysis, LiDAR data handling, hydrodynamic modeling and Python programming is preferred, but the successful candidate will receive training as needed to supplement their initial capabilities. Excellent data management skills and a journal publication track record are preferred. Salary and employee benefits will conform to the terms of the UC system-wide postdoctoral scholars union. There are over 1,000 postdocs at UC Davis, providing a diverse, vibrant community of scholars.

The application deadline is September 14, 2018. The position is open immediately but the starting date has some flexibility recognizing the time it takes to arrange a visa, if needed. Please send curriculum vitae and contact information for three academic or professional references to Professor Greg Pasternack by e-mail to gpast@ucdavis.edu. UC Davis is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer.
