Journal of Hydraulic Research (JHR). Vol. 58 | Issue 5, October 2020

The Journal of Hydraulic Research (JHR) publishes research papers in theoretical, experimental and computational hydraulics and fluid mechanics, relating to rivers, lakes, estuaries, coasts, constructed waterways, and some internal flows such as pipe flows. To reflect current trends in water research, articles that explore outcomes of interdisciplinary hydro-environment studies with a strong fluid mechanical component are especially welcome. Although preference is given to fundamental issues, papers focusing on important unconventional or emerging applications of broad interest are also appreciated.

Overview

Journal of Hydraulic Research (JHR). October 2020 issueThe October 2020 issue contains novel and fundamental contributions to open channel flows including hydraulic jumps, canopy flows, fish guidance, gravity currents, onset of vortices in turbines, water wheels, and sediment transport. The contributions to open channel flows include a unique investigation into the coupling of the interaction of one- and two-dimensional models, investigation of the validity range of the hydrostatic assumption in dam-break, development of a novel finite-volume Saint-Venant solver scheme for supercritical and subcritical flows, experimental study of the complex air–water flow properties in hydraulic jumps on slopes, and investigation of the effect of floating objects in flood modelling and risk assessment. In addition, an efficient numerical representation of the impacts of flexible plant reconfiguration on canopy posture and hydrodynamic drag is established, where highly accurate representations of mean horizontal flow velocity and Reynolds stress profiles over the canopy as well as turbulence intensities are presented. The hydraulic performance of fish guidance structures with curved bars has been studied in a suite of two papers with one focussing on the hydraulic performance of the novel curved-bar racks and the establishment of head loss relation, while the other focusses on the flow field details. Also included is a paper on experimental investigation of two-layer stratified gravity currents in the slumping phase for a range of the Froude number, density difference ratio, and the buoyancy distribution parameter. The issue concludes with three technical notes: one on optimization of undershot water wheels in very low and variable flow rate applications, one on Acoustic Doppler Velocimetry (ADV) measurements of flow over a backward-facing step and, lastly, one on numerical modelling of the hydrodynamics and sediment transport near the water intake of the Cardinal power plant.
