Key Messages

Dr. Majid Mohammadian introduced the effluent discharges and modelling of them. He covered numerical details of effluent discharge modelling such as governing equations, mesh creation, boundary conditions, choices of turbulence models. He also introduced OpenFOAM as a strong CFD tool for modelling effluent discharges. He finally presented some past numerical studies completed on effluent discharges under different configurations.

Dr. Xiaohui Yan introduced the techniques of practical modelling of effluent discharges with starting the modelling simple and adding details to CFD models. He briefly talked about the model calibration and validation. He also reviewed several case studies from discharge into stratified ambient water to discharge in bend sections as well as effluent discharges using rosette diffusers.

Dr. Hossein Kheirkhah talked about numerical modelling of effluent discharges into shallow waters, as an area that was not studied much in the past. He highlighted the importance of the topic from research and engineering design perspectives. He then presented two recent studies on dense jet discharges in shallow waters: 1) Inclined Dense Effluent Discharge Modelling in Shallow Waters, and 2) Vertical Dense Effluent Discharge Modelling in Shallow Waters.

Presenters responded to approximately 20 questions at the end of the presentation.
