‘Symposium on Ice’ Proceedings Now Open Access and Downloadable

We are excited to announce that all 26 proceedings of the IAHR International  Symposium on Ice, from the very first edition in Reykjavik in 1970 to the latest in Montreal in 2022, are now included in the IAHR Document Library, accessible and downloadable to the public.

With a total of about 2700 articles, the 26 sets of proceedings have been prepared in a collaboration between the IAHR Secretariat, the IAHR Technical Committee on Ice Research and Engineering (CIRE) and the National Research Council of Canada (NRC).

The first edition of IAHR’s International Symposium on Ice, then called Symposium on Ice and its Action on Hydraulic Structures, was held in Reykjavík in 1970, and mostly on a biennial basis thereafter. The topics that were addressed during these 52 years were mainly on ice engineering, both in freshwater and saline water environments. River ice, ice mechanics, ice forces and ice interaction with structures were usually included. The impact of climate change as a topic appeared in the early 1990’s, while input related with ecology, water quality and impacts of oil spills began in the late 1990’s. Some of the proceedings included the outcome of several working groups on topical issues such as ice force, hydraulics and modeling.

A detailed review and analysis of the symposium’s history, its themes and topics, geographical distribution of contributions and co-authoring were done by Dr. Paul D. Barrette, from NRC, in his article “Fifty years of IAHR’s Symposium on Ice: Country contribution and international co-authorship” for the 26th IAHR International Symposium on Ice (Montreal, 2022). That study points to an increase in the level of international collaboration from 0% to almost 50% during that time.

For all the proceedings of the Ice Symposium, please visit IAHR » Document Library » Technical Event » Committee on Ice Research and Engineering. They are also accessible from CIRE’s webpage.

IAHR Secretariat has been working hard to digitalize proceedings of our world congresses, regional congresses and technical conferences, but greater efforts are still needed to process all articles. If you can help, please contact us: it@iahr.org.
