12pm Ottawa / New York I 2pm Sao Paulo I 5pm UTC | 6pm Madrid | 10:30pm New Delhi

Watch on Demand

The main objectives of the IAHR/IWA joint committee on outfall systems are to advance the science and technology of all aspects of wastewater discharges from outfalls and their design, to disseminate knowledge and to facilitate communication between the diverse groups of practitioners in the field. This webinar includes two presentations relating to the operation of outfall systems, the first focusing on monitoring and compliance, and the second on how numerical modelling can assist their design.

Welcome address and introductions (10 mins)

Hossein Kheirkhah | Senior Water Resources Engineer at Barr Engineering Co., United States

Presenters (25 mins x 2)

  • Outfall monitoring - a case study from the City of Dili in Timor Leste. This presentation discusses a strategy to prove compliance with both discharge standards and within receiving water bodies.
Eduardo Yassuda | Senior Coastal Engineer - Tetra Tech South America
Marco Antonio Correa | Senior Oceanographer - Tetra Tech South America

  • Numerical modeling is an important step in the sustainable design of outfall system to minimize their environmental impacts. This presentation discusses the numerical simulation of effluent discharges mixing with ambient waters.
Majid Mohammadian | Professor of Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Ottawa, Canada

Introduction

This webinar series continues our focus on the topic of wastewater outfall systems including discharges of demestic, industrial or desalination waste streams to inland and coastal receiving waterways.

The planning, design and siting of outfalls is a complex task that relies on many disciplines including oceanography, civil and environmental engineering, marine biology, construction, economics, public relations and social and cultural matters.

The primary purpose of the webinar series is to bring together a broad range of these disciplines and to provide a forum for presentations and discussion relating to recent research and real-life case studies.
