IAHR is inviting institutions, professionals, and stakeholders to participate in a high-level meeting that will bring together leading hydro-environment engineering and research institutes from around the world. The objective is present the key findings of the Global Water Institutes Report on Digital Transformation of the Water Sector – Accelerators and Risks initiative. The meeting will be held in the frame of the 41st IAHR World Congress in Singapore from 22 to 27 June 2025.

More than 120 organisations have participated in the IAHR Global Water Institutes Survey on Digital Transformation in the Water Sector, providing outstanding input that will help shape the future of digital water management. This survey aims to gather insights from leadings water institutions to inform a report on digital transformation.

This event represents a unique opportunity for organisations and individuals seeking a broad and informed perspective on the Digital Transformation of the water sector.

 About the Report

The Global Water Institutes Report on the Digital Transformation of the Water Sector is underpinned by the insights and views of major global institutes representing the hydro-environment engineering and research communities in countries around the world. Selected peak organisations from different regions of the world are invited to participate in the development of the report.

The report focusses on two key areas:

  •  Digital Accelerators:  Which key technologies, tools and approaches shape the digital transformation of current and future water management.  What is the state of the art and what are the priorities for research, development and implementation? Key areas: Data and sensoring; Internet of Things; Modelling; Artificial intelligence; Big data; Digital twins

  • Risks and challenges: What are the major constraints, challenges and inherent trade-offs that accompany the digital transformation journey for countries, water basins, cities and sectoral users.

The structure of the report is:

  • Preface

  • Executive Summary

  • Introduction:

    • Data, on site sensing, Internet of Things

    • Data, Remote sensing, Earth Observation

    • Modelling

    • Artificial Intelligence

    • Digital twins

  • Conclusions

Each thematic area (chapters 2 to 6) will follow the same sub-structure:

  • Overview

  • Why do it? What benefits? What gains?

  • When should we not do it? What should be careful about?

  • What do we need to do? Where should we focus our efforts?  biggest potential or bang for our buck?  what innovations should we keep an eye on?  From perspectives of decision makers, solution providers and researchers.
