IAHR is proud to report the successful delivery of the 1st course in its newly introduced IAHR Training Courses Series: the Online Training Course on Modelling Software for Transient Flows, held from 24 to 28 March 2025. Organised by the IAHR Working Group on Transient Flows in discussion with and support from IAHR secretariat and leadership, the course marks a significant milestone in IAHR’s commitment to providing high-quality, accessible training to the global hydraulics community.
Designed for hydraulic engineers engaged in the design, operation, and maintenance of hydraulic systems—including those related to hydropower, industrial processes, and urban water infrastructure—the course offered a comprehensive overview of modelling software for transient flows in pressurized systems.
The programme began with key foundation sessions of the underlying theory and discussion of the modelling assumptions common to standard engineering software and applications. This was followed by detailed presentations of a wide range of commercial and non-commercial software solutions, including open-access, freeware, and payware platforms. The tools were demonstrated through insightful case studies showcasing their applicability to real-world hydraulic systems. The course concluded with an open discussion, highlighting key takeaways on the capabilities and limitations of modelling software in supporting the design, protection, operation, and maintenance of systems subject to transient flow conditions.

Strong Participation and Community Growth
The course attracted over 400 registrations, with 275 participants attending the live sessions.
Participants’ satisfaction has been assessed through an evaluation survey with very positive feedback (44,12% excellent; 55.92% very good), including constructive suggestions and ideas for further initiatives.
In addition to its technical success, the course also contributed significantly to the growth of the IAHR community, welcoming 65 new members, primarily from industry, and two new Institute Members, Power Vision and Bentley.
