Video Introduction:

Over the past decades and centuries, human interventions significantly altered the characteristics of rivers. The resulting imbalance of flow, sediment, and wood transport has severe effects on the river ecosystem. Therefore, the restoration of river habitat has become a critical problem with prominent activities in Europe, Australia, and the USA. To contribute to these ongoing restoration efforts, an improved understanding of the physical and biological interactions in river systems is crucial as well as the development of successful and cost-effective river restoration methods. In this talk, Isabella will present her ongoing research on the interaction between flow, sediment, and wood. In particular, (1) how the flow and morphological structures due to wood placements can be used to improve river restoration projects, and (2) what the possible implications of increased wood transport in rivers are on river infrastructures.
