Rodi studied aeronautical engineering at the University of Stuttgart, graduating in 1966 as a Dipl.-Ing. away. In 1973 he received his Ph.D. at Imperial College London, where he held a position as research assistant in the Department of Mechanical Engineering from 1968 to 1972. He returned to Germany, where he was project manager of the Collaborative Research Center 80 at the University of Karlsruhe and in 1978 he habilitated there with the work turbulence models and their application to problems in hydraulic engineering. From 1981 to 2007, Rodi was a professor and head of the Turbulent Flows department at the Institute for Hydromechanics in Karlsruhe. Rodi is concerned with computational methods for turbulent flows, with the application of the computational methods to a wide range of engineering and environmental problems, and with supporting experimental studies of turbulent flows.
