About
Greg Paxson, P.E., D.WRE is National Practice Leader for Dams at Schnabel Engineering, a United States engineering firm that specializes and dams and geotechnical engineering. Greg has over 25 years of experience in dams and hydraulic structures, with a focus on the rehabilitation of dams and splllway design. He has been involved in the evaluation and rehabilitation of over 100 dams. Greg’s spillway experience includes research, modeling, and design for structural spillways, including over 20 constructed labyrinth spillways in the USA. He has led CFD and physical model studies and collaborated with academia on research. In addition to dam evaluation and design, Greg has experience in dam safety program management through his work supporting dam owners in the water supply and hydropower industry. Of note, Greg led the 2013, 2017, and 2021 independent external peer reviews of the US Army Corps of Engineers’ (USACE) Dam Safety Program, which included evaluation of the organization and the USACE risk informed management of a portfolio of more than 700 high hazard dams. He also has experience with risk informed decision making (RIDM) for dam and levee safety projects. This includes serving as a risk analysis facilitator and risk modeler and also as subject matter expert for risk analyses. Greg is the current chair of the Hydraulics and Hydrology Committee of the United States Society on Dams (USSD) and the United States delegate to the Hydraulics of Dams Committee of the International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD). He is the current chair of the Technical Journal Committee for the Association of Dam Safety Officials (ASDSO), which publishes the Journal of Dam Safety. He is the past chair of the ASDSO Advisory Committee and served on the ASDSO Annual Conference Planning Committee from 2014 through 2021. Greg has authored or coauthored over 40 papers, primarily focused on dam rehabilitation and hydrologic and hydraulic analysis for dams and hydraulic structures. He has also organized and presented workshops for ICOLD and USSD related to spillway capacity for dams.
