Wuhan University
About
Yifan Yang is now a Professor in River Engineering at Wuhan University, China, and an awardee of the NSFC Grant for Excellent Young Scien(st Overseas in 2022. He has special interests in hydraulic engineering, sediment transport, and fluvial processes. Yifan completed his BE and ME at Hohai University, China, and PhD in Civil Engineering at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, where he specialised in bridge scour problems. A^er comple(ng his PhD, Yifan took on a postdoctoral research role at the University of Auckland and, in parallel, worked as a civil engineer at Wellington Water. The hybrid experience brought Yifan visions of how researchers and prac((oners collaborate to achieve common goals. Then, Yifan was appointed as a Lecturer/Assistant Professor at the University of Waikato, where he contributed to integra(ng AI in flood risk management, data-driven modelling for scour processes, and applying smart sensors in sediment transport research. Since undertaking his current role at Wuhan University, Yifan has been leading a team tackling river training problems in sediment-laden rivers, notably the Yellow River in China, focusing on the applica(on strategies of dikes and levees, their scour risks, and approaches to sustainable sediment management. Yifan has been publishing in leading journals and has had a direct impact on both academic and industry prac(ces, including his involvement in consul(ng projects that inform industrial guidelines and infrastructure designs.
