About

João Delgado is a Senior R&D Engineer at EDP NEW, the R&D centre of the EDP Group whose mission is to create new possibilities to lead the clean energy transition. His work focuses on Renewable Energy Sources Integration & Flexibility, including Grid Integration, Energy Markets, Virtual Power Plants, Storage, Hydrogen and Decarbonisation of Big Hubs & Industry. He is the coordinator of the Alqueva, Alto Lindoso and Caniçada demonstrators, totalling an installed capacity of 1.2 GW, in the scope of the XFLEX HYDRO project. Previously, João was a hydraulic design engineer and consultant in large-scale multidisciplinary projects of dams, hydroelectric powerplants and energy recovery in water supply systems in Portugal and several African countries. He also developed research in optimisation of variable speed hydropower technology, and the numerical modelling of hydraulic transients, totalling a cumulative experience in the hydropower sector of 8 years between industry and academia. João holds a PhD in Energy from the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland, and an MSc degree in Civil Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico, Portugal. He is also the Vice President of Portugal’s Young Professional Network of the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research.
