* This profile page is created/updated for the 1st IAHR Online Forum (July 5-7, 2021) * Mr Abou Amani has been appointed the Director of the Division of Water Sciences and Secretary of the Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme (IHP) effective 1 March 2021. He served before as the Chief of the Executive Office of the Natural Science Sector from 1 June 2019 and as of 23 June 2020 was appointed Director ad interim of the Division of Water Sciences, Secretary ad interim of the Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme. Mr Amani joined in the Division of Water Sciences, at Headquarters, Paris, in January 2016 as the Chief of the Section on Hydrological Systems and Water Scarcity. He led and guided the Section activities for the delivery to Member States of improved knowledge, capacity, policy advice, methodologies and tools for addressing water related disasters, hydrological change and water scarcity challenges. Before joining Headquarters, he was the Regional Hydrologist for Africa based in Nairobi Regional office in Kenya from 2010 to 2015 and was in charge of the implementation of the UNESCO International Hydrological Programme in Sub-Saharan Africa and based. He contributed to raise the visibility of the IHP in Africa and to build strategic partnerships with key regional water stakeholders in providing support to Africa member states. He was the Officer in Charge of the UNESCO Nairobi office from October 2012 to December 2012 and of the Maputo office from 10 July 2013 to 30 May 2014.He joined UNESCO in 2006 as Natural Sciences Programme Specialist and served in UNESCO Office in Accra before moving to Nairobi in 2010. Before joining UNESCO, he worked at AGRHYMET in Niamey for more than eight years as Regional Hydrologist, Head of Water Unit and Scientific Coordinator. He worked for three years for the Institute of Research for Development (IRD) as researcher and visiting scientist. He has been member and contributor of various committees, initiatives, panels for among others: World Water Council (WWC), IPCC and World Water Development Report (WWDR). He has many years of research and teaching and he is author of more than 50 scientific papers. He holds a PhD in civil engineering from Polytechnic of Montreal in Canada (July 1995) and he is a civil engineer graduated from “Ecole de Polytechnique de Thiès” in Senegal (June 1990). He also holds the title of “Maître de recherche” which is equivalent to senior researcher or Associate Professor delivered by CAMES (African Higher Education Council).
