Tommaso Abrate is a Scientific Officer in the Earth System Monitoring Division of WMO. He holds a Master's degree in Geology from the University of Turin, a degree in Environmental Engineering from the Polytechnic of Turin and a Master's degree in Hydrology and Hydrogeology from the University of Paris VI. He has extensive experience in supporting the development and implementation of projects for strengthening observations and data exchange (WHYCOS program and its regional components) in Africa (Congo, Niger, Senegal and Volta basins) and in other regions of the world. It oversees WMO activities related to the development of standards, in cooperation with ISO and CEN, and guidance documents for operational hydrology, including the organization and delivery of training courses. Tommaso has also been involved in flood forecasting and management and risk assessment projects in Africa and Europe and is actively cooperating with UN-Water's Integrated Monitoring Initiative partners in the design of indicators for monitoring of SDG 6 - Water and Sanitation (IMISDG6).
