About
Dr. Nicola Balbarini is a water resources engineer and modelling expert with responsibilities of leading the operational services team and strategic R&D activities within the Water Resources Department at DHI. He has specialized in issues relating to climate change adaptation, flood early warning, basin development planning and water pollution. Throughout both R&D and commercial project, he has developed an in-depth technical knowledge of mathematical model application to groundwater and surface water flows and contaminant transport. He has contributed to the development of flow and flood forecasting services based on numerical models and machine learning technologies. This includes leading the development of a global early warning system for plastic litter in rivers to support UNEP in addressing the challenge of plastic pollution. In addition to the technical work, he has managed and contributed at project activities that focus on stakeholder participation, teaching, and capacity building for better management of water resources.
