Abstract: Recently, the Naesung River which is a sand-bed channel has been a matter of public concern due to anticipated channel change after Youngju dam impoundment. Thus, objective and scientific research should be made. On this background, this study analyzed vegetation recruitment, growth and succession in the river in relation with changes of hydrology, water quality and morphology caused by dam construction. For this, concentrated vegetation monitoring was made for 4sites of interest including two Yonghyul sites just downstream of the dam and two scenic sites including Hoeryongpo and Sudori. As a result, one-and two-year herbs were introduced to all the sites. Exotic plants were introduced to both scenic sites which many tourists visited. During the first year of this investigation, relatively small floods passed along the river. Peak stages of these floods effectively covered all the bar surface of these study sites, but young willow trees which were introduced before this year survived at upstream Yonghyul site. They may continue to grow there under flow condition regulated after dam impoundment. At present dam impoundment do not yet begin, thus vegetation change along of the Naesung River is not considered clear. Follow-up study will be continued concerning the vegetation recruitment, growth and succession in the river according to dam operation.
