Abstract: Oil spills contingency planning is a necessity of today world, due to increase in frequency of oil spill. Vietnam has seen number of incidents of oil spill in its history. Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) maps are important tools for oil spill planning and response measures worldwide. In Vietnam still does not have national ESI guidelines, hence NOAA guidelines were used in preparing the ESI maps. The United States of America, through the NOAA has developed standardized guidelines for preparing ESI maps. In this study, ESI maps for Cat Ba Island were prepared as per NOAA guidelines. These maps serve as efficient tool and indispensable part of contingency plan for oil spill and response in this region. It can also be expanded to various regions of Vietnam.
