Abstract: A box groyne is composed of various types of single groyne to satisfy the different river ecological requirements. While plenty of researches have been conducted on straight groynes, less information is available for the flow structure around box groyne with longitudinal block. The present study mainly touches upon the box groyne with a longitudinal block composed of straight and L-shape groyne under emerged condition by experiment. In this study, both the placement and the length of longitudinal block were taken into account to explore their effects on the flow structure and water exchange process. The velocity vectors were measured by two-dimensional PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry). The water exchange process was investigated by dye concentration measurement and PIV method. The development of vortex structures and their motion trails inside the goryne zone were affected by the longitudinal block. The placement of the longitudinal block obviously influences the number and scale of circulating flow inside the box groyne area. The water exchange process was significantly changed by the placement and length of the longitudinal block.
