Abstract: Basal energy sources are very important for studying food web in river ecosystem. In this paper, we investigated the differences in basal energy sources (periphyton and seston) by using the stable isotope method (δ 13 C). It was found that 1) the periphyton differed inδ 13 C under two different flow regimes below dams and was depleted at higher flow; 2) there were significant differences in periphytonδ 13 C between unregulated condition (upper dam) and regulated condition (below dam) (p 13 C was higher under regulated condition than under unregulated condition, but the differences were not statistically significant differences (p=0.07). The differences indicated that flow regime and dam can influence the stable carbon isotopic signature of the basal energy source in river ecosystem. By knowing these differences, it could provide some valuable information for properly interpreting the food web or food chain in the river restoration programs.
