Abstract: VIV is a well known phenomenon among engineers, usually due to its disastrous effects that cause a structure to vibrate in resonance and fail. A recent innovation demonstrated that extraction of clean and green energy could be possible by utilizing the synchronization. In order to appropriately predict the synchronous behaviour, several researchers have carried out analytical, numerical and experimental studies. Most of the analytical work focused on wake oscillation model which has been solved in frequency domain while the numerical work employed RANS equations to calculate coefficient of lift then wake oscillator model is used to predict oscillation response of cylinder. In present work the cylinder response is directly calculated from a RANS model, thus eliminating the need for an empirical oscillator model, but also including the effects of body motion within the RANS environment. The performance of elastically mounted horizontal cylinder for various Reynolds numbers ranging from 6046 to 36276 is studied and compared with published literature. The results show that, a RANS model with Realizable two layer k-εeclosure model utilizing a moving mesh approach will provide a self sufficient tool to compute VIV oscillations.
