Abstract: Regulated stream systems may include complicated physical features, such as multiple run-of-the-river dams, locks and dams, and regulated dams. In addition, highly unsteady flows may exist or may be expected, with regard to the planning for peaking hydropower releases. There are many water quality models; however, most of these models were developed for steady flow conditions and thus are not appropriate while considering time-varying flows. The Seonakdong River is an impound stream, and its flowrate is controlled by the Daejeo and Noksan gates. As a result, there is no constant flow. Furthermore, pollutants have been continuously flowing into the river. The Seonakdong River is an estuarine tributary of the Nakdong River and is a reservoir-like river used for agricultural irrigation, with gates at the mouth of the river to prevent the intrusion of saline. Since the construction of water gates, the quality of the river water has worsened. This could also be due to the internal loading of pollutants, especially nutrients, from the sediments of the river because of the detention time by the water gates. To resolve these problems and obtain better water quality from the Seonakdong River, control of the flowrate and velocity through optimum gate operation is required. Therefore, the objective of this study is to provide alternatives for the rehabilitation of the hydrologic cycle by using the hydrologic model and to investigate the current hydrologic cycle system. Therefore, this study simulated the daily streamflow for the Seonakdong River using the SWAT model with GIS (Geographic Information Systems).
