Abstract: The formation of river channel sandbars is considered closely related to the growth of trees on them, and is also controlled by flow rate. The purpose of this study is therefore to clarify how sandbar development is related to factors such as flow fluctuation and tree growth. At the Shibetsu River meander restoration test site, detailed studies of sandbar formation and the invasion of vegetation onto them are being conducted in a rectangular channel. A vegetation survey was carried out by setting three survey sections (A, B and C) from the sides to the center of the channel in the transverse direction on a sandbar formed on a curve at the test site. The sediment accumulation height was compared with temporal changes in the flow rate and water level to enable study of the relationship between them. Most of the trees here were Japanese fantail willow and Salix kinuyanagi.
