Abstract: Based on the 1999a and 2007a Landsat TM images and the technique of GIS spatial analysis, the temporal-spatial characteristics of soil erosion in the Xiangxi River Watershed (XRW) before and after impounding of Three Gorges Reservoir is studied with the Markov Chain Model (MCM). The result indicated that the area of the soil erosion in the XRW reduced from 1999a to 2007a, the proportion of the areas of slightly erosion increased from65.10%to 90.33%, and the light and middle degree erosion reduced from 14.18%and 16.03%to 1.86 and 3.56%, respectively. However, there were some areas became more serous in the XRW on the view of spatial distribution, such as 1.26%and 1.20%of slightly erosion and light erosion became middle degree erosion, which mainly distributed in the area of river sources and in two banks of the river. The reason for this maybe caused by population migration and deforest and reclamation after impounding of Three Gorges Reservoir.
