Abstract: The Auckland Regional Council launched two projects to investigate innovative and sustainable stormwater treatment devices. The first project investigated crushed mussel shells as filter media for heavy metal removal by adsorption processes; the second investigated floating vegetated wetlands for contaminant removal by biosorption processes. A detailed literature review and series of laboratory experiments were conducted to assess the feasibility of both projects. Laboratory results were promising, and field trials have started to investigate effectiveness under variable conditions.
