Abstract: This paper presents a water quality modeling study of Carmarthen Bay in West Wales, UK, in which several Escherichia coli (E. coli) decay rate approaches are used. The model solves the2D depth-averaged shallow water equations and the mass transport equation for E. coli, and uses three methods to represent the E. coli decay rate: a constant decay rate, day-and nighttime decay rates and a time varying decay rate that takes into account light, temperature and salinity. The sensitivity of the E. coli concentration in the Bay to the decay rate approach is analyzed.
