Abstract: Proposed hydropower dams for the Zambezi Rover in Mozambique include Boroma (444 MW) and Lupata (654 MW) dams, the first meant as a flow regulation dam for the peaking operation of the upstream Mphanda Nkuwa dam (1 300 MW). Reservoir and downstream water quality impacts of Boroma and Lupata dams were evaluated with the 2D hydrodynamic model CE-Qual-W2. Results suggest weak thermal stratification in the Boroma reservoir and low downstream water quality changes. For the Lupata reservoir thermal stratification was observed and eutrophication identified as a potential water quality degradation problem.
