Abstract: The capability of earthen levees, dikes, and embankments to withstand sustained wave overtopping is a function of hydraulic loading severity, duration of wave overtopping exposure, and the robustness of the levee grass/soil system. This paper documents 12 fullscale wave overtopping tests of grass sod placed atop sandy soils (including 2 tests with turf reinforcement mattresses). Grass resiliency was found to be a function of cumulative wave overtopping volume and grass root parameters.
