Abstract: Piano key weirs (PKW) are part of the labyrinth weir family and represent new structures to increase discharge capacities relative to linear weirs. During the last few years, several research investigations have analyzed discharge coefficients and general flow characteristics of PKW. The present study deals with a comparison of experimentally and numerically determined for discharge coefficient data for a single PKW geometry tested with in-channel and three different reservoir approach flow configurations. The experimental data collected using laboratory-scale PKWs at Utah State University were compared with numerical 3D simulations generated at Lubeck University of Applied Sciences using commercially available software (FLOW-3D). The RNG turbulence model, based on a standard k-ε-model, was used for simulations. The paper presents the PKW model details and gives comparative results of discharge coefficients and flow characteristics.
