Abstract: This paper presents preliminary results of an experimental study focusing on the development of design guidelines for culverts in steep streams considering sediment transport conditions. Hydraulic performance curves of three different inlet configurations are presented. The curves are discussed with regard to the flow patterns in the culvert expansion section which were dominated by a jet regime resulting from the supercritical flow in the steep approach channel. Moreover, the sediment trapping efficiency of the studied setups is discussed based on the amount of sediments deposited in the channel expansion section and with regard to the observed jet flow pattern.
