Abstract: In this study we investigate changes in the precipitation regime in mainland Portugal and the climatology of extreme events. We analyse indices of extreme precipitation calculated from 27daily precipitation time series (1941-2012) recorded across the area. Results show regional differences in the indices’trends. They point out to significant variations in the intensity, persistence and frequency of extreme events at various scales, which may influence the risk associated with floods and droughts.
