Abstract: This paper focuses on the spatial and temporal bed morphological changes in river contractions. To this purpose, some experiments were carried out at University of Basilicata Italy, in a 1 m wide and 20 m long rectangular channel. Based on dimensional analysis some empirical models are proposed to predict the temporal progress of the main bed features as function of contraction ratio, densimetric Froude number, relative contraction length, and dimensionless time. Also, experimental data are compared against the results from a 2D numerical model (CCHE2D–University of Mississippi). The numerical model proved to be capable to predict the location and magnitude of the scour hole and the aggradation zone reasonably well.
