Abstract: Climate change is another pressure on the management of water resources. As the discussion, concerning climate change and its impact on water resources is getting on lately, a new approach, this of the assessment of the water footprint provide interesting information in various levels of the analysis. Lake Koronia, is one of the 10 most important Ramsar protected wetlands in Greece. The intensive agricultural activity together with the unsustainable practices used in industry and in urban use resulted to the degradation of the lake and the whole ecosystem which it supports. Agriculture is the dominant water user in the river basin. This paper presents the intensive agricultural activity around the lake and its impact in the environment. By analyzing the water footprint of major crops in Lake Koronia river basin, appropriate changes in crops and irrigation methods are proposed in order to promote good farming practices which are compatible with the new climate conditions and which contribute proactively to promote a balanced economic development in the area ensuring the protection of the lake.
