Abstract: The upgrade procedure for a real time flood forecasting and decision support system is described for the case of the Tagus basin in central Spain. The system has been operational during the last 9years and it is focused in the control of multiple reservoir cascades during snow melting events. The description includes explanations of the data flow traffic, data storage and exploitation in databases, historical and real time validation of telemetric data, forecasting shells and hydrological and hydraulic models, comparing the former architecture and tools against the improved and available technologies. The selected operational tools are described in detail as a guide for other practitioners and feedback for researchers.
