Abstract: During experimental works in physical models of spillways regulated by floodgate, it is usual to obtain the flow rate curve associated to this spillway. This process is analysed both in free surface condition and in different floodgate opening positions. By the way, it is very interesting in this type of models to study too the pressures over the upper spillway face. The objective of this analysis is to detect the appearance of negative pressures in water spills above the gate. This study need to allocate a range of pressure sensors in the physical model, spending high economic costs and long time monitoring periods. To speed up this process, a numerical model with SPH is generated to obtain a range of points for the rate curve. As well, it is possible to obtain pressure values over the upper spillway face with this mathematical model. In this sense, these values can be showed both for an instant and average time. Moreover, SPH model allows making a detailed analysis of the spillway hydrodynamic. This study reproduces the spillway of the Alarcon Dam (Spain) from a physical and numerical (SPH) point of view, showing very similar results. For this reason, SPH can be considered as a useful and precise tool to complement and reduce the physical model costs.
