Abstract: To study the effect of vegetation on the sediment transport rate in a vegetated stream, a series of tests were conducted in a special flume at the Hydraulic Laboratory of the University of Trento. Plants were modeled with aluminum cylindrical elements arranged in staggered configurations. The tests were performed in different conditions: different distributions of the rigid elements, sediments of different density and size, and different solid and liquid discharges. In this paper we first outline the previous findings on sediment transport rate and then describe a new series of experiments conducted in the same channel in order to find a formulation for the global friction coefficient able to furnish the proper value of the global friction velocity to be inserted in the transport rate formulation. We also present and comment on some experiments on the flow field between the stems conducted using a PIV technique.
