Abstract: In this study the local scour depth at spillways in uniform, non-cohesive sediment beds under clear-water conditions and steady flows is considered. The equations proposed to date for predicting the equilibrium scour depth and the scour evolution with time are examined. The accuracy of such formulas are evaluated by using sets of scour data from prototypes and models. Existing definitions of the characteristic spatial scale are discussed and a new characteristic length scale is proposed based on new physical insights of the local scour mechanism at the downstream of a spillway. A new parameter is introduced which is shown to improve the predictive capabilities of the existing equations.
