Abstract: We are facing reinforced natural hazards and an increasing potential damage. At the same time, our funds for risk prevention are limited and must be used optimally. We need objective tools to evaluate the economic efficiency of submitted protection projects. This article presents the conceptual approach, the application process and the experiences gained from implementing an on-line tool to calculate the benefit and the cost effectiveness of measures in integrated risk management projects for natural hazards. The tool, which is known as “Econo Me” , is being developed under the leadership of the Swiss Federal Office of the Environment. It is used to evaluate the cost-benefit ratio of projects that are submitted for federal subsidies.
