Abstract: To ensure an appropriate protection level against natural hazards in alpine settlement areas, the State of Bavaria is faced with two main challenges: ·Keeping up the existing protection measures and the existing protection level (given by design event) ·Erecting new protection systems for still endangered areas This is getting more complicated due to reduced personnel and financial resources, limited space, risen demands for security and different boundary conditions, which changed in past and may change even more quickly in future. Therefore new robust, flexible, adaptable and integrated concepts are needed, with limited need for maintenance and the possibility to react on future developments like climate change. Thus, the modernization of the protection concepts is necessary. Therefore the new state of the art, like actual land use, technical improvements, integral risk management and much more, has to be implemented into the existing systems. Furthermore some new aspects and approaches have to be incorporated, like: ·Regarding possible future developments (change of land use, tourism, etc. -not only climate change) ·Establishing flexible and adaptable concepts under participation of all relevant stakeholders ·Sum up all the mentioned aspects in a manual “way to integral torrent development concepts” In the following the intended approach to reach this target and some first results will be presented.
