Abstract: In this contribution, a shallow water model was chosen for simulating overland and river flow together with the source term method which takes the effective precipitation into account as a source term in the continuity equation. This approach has first been applied to a medium size catchment which consists of about 45 km2rural and urban areas and80 km of creeks. After processing various input data, an unstructured grid of about 2. 9 million elements was generated. The plausibility of the model was checked for an extreme rainfall event in the range of available data. On the basis of a 100-years rainfall event, the suitability and effectiveness of several flood protection measures have been investigated and evaluated considering technical, economic and further local aspects. The approach chosen here seems to be applicable to large scale catchments.
