Study of the Ground Water Level of Barcelona

Abstract: In the last two decades, when most of the industries of Barcelona have been moving away from the city, the ground water level has been arising and reaching ancient levels producing problems in basements of buildings and other structures. This communication presents a synthesis of the study that the City Council, the Politechnical University of Catalonia and CLABSA made in order to analyse the existing problem, the possible future situations and give solutions to stop the increasing levels by using the ground water. In order to analyse the problems arising from ground water, the City Council signed an Agreement with the Politechnical University of Catalonia and CLABSA, the technical manager of the sewer system of Barcelona, to develop a study of the ground water of Barcelona Plain. This communication states the most relevant aspects of this study including: ·The necessary data (topography, geology, inflow and outflow of water, variations in level) by gathering historical data and analysis of water quality, and a monitoring network formed by 52 wells in which the levels have been measured. ·The mathematical model that allows us to analyse the hydrogeological balance, to quantify and locate the possible uses and to make predictions on the behaviour of the water table. The different hypotheses that were put forward point to a general rise under current conditions, with variations according to areas. ·The practical use of the mathematical model Several conclusions about the quantification of ground water extraction rate, their possible use and water quality close the communication.
