Abstract: Two 3-cellular models giving 3-item equation for recession curve are described and compared on the base of solutions of differential equations for instantaneous recharge to the aquifer. The first model infers that under recharge there is initially distribution of water between porous blocks, fissures and conduits, but no water exchange between them. The second model assumes that the recharge of the aquifer proceeds through conduits, and reaches porous blocks through fissures. The lumped model proposed by Estrela et al. (1987) has been applied to simulate the response to the recharge of karstic aquifer situated in the region near the town of Kotel. Two periods have been simulated: one period without recharge to the aquifer (from 28December 1993 to 24 January 1994) and another with recharge to the aquifer (from 23April to 11 May 1987). The data from the first period was used to assess parameters of the 3-cellular model. The comparison between observed and simulated values has shown that the model proposed by Estrela et al. (1987) gives rather satisfactory results and may be applied for further attempts in simulation. The analysis of the response of the aquifer to recharge gives possibilities to reveal some peculiarities of the internal structure of the karst massive by the aid of models. The choice of the better model for the Kotel spring could be made after simulation of longer periods.
