Abstract: When studying erosional behaviour of cohesive mixtures, it is usual to relate sediment transport to a shear parameter. So it is quite obvious that a straightforward and reliable calculation of the bed shear stress is crucial. In this paper the existing methods to derive a bed shear stress from the recorded hydraulic conditions are examined using flume tests during transport conditions. The influence of water level variation on the side wall elimination methods is assessed and a method to eliminate this influence is proposed. If a reliable value of the wall roughnes has been determined, the Kleijwegt method can be used for tests in a flume with circular crosssection during transport conditions. This method is then applied to evaluate bedload transport for mixtures of non-cohesive and cohesive material.
