Abstract: This paper mainly deals with the hydraulic characteristics in plunge pool for high arch dam under different ambient air pressures, including the flow patterns in plunge pool, the time-average pressure and fluctuating pressure on bottom floor of plunge pool and the fluctuating pressure on the downstream dam face. Based on the results, we have found that the flow patterns and other hydraulic characteristics in plunge pool all change with the reduction of ambient pressure in vacuum tank. In this paper, we have made a preliminary discussion concerning this problem.
