Abstract: The safety factor is essential in designing hydraulic structures because estimated flood quantile for a given return period is usually subject to errors. These errors are mainly specified by two categories such as a data error and a model one. It is necessary to estimate the safety factor for considering the effect of these errors. In this paper, flood frequency analyses based on the classical parametric methods and alternative smoothing techniques were performed. Based on smoothing techniques, the safety factors were derived from the flood quantiles which had been obtained from the generated data. As the results, smoothing techniques can be suggested to estimate the flood quantiles within interpolating ranges, and the safety factor can give reliable flood quantiles according to the assumed distributions.
