Abstract: Flood control reservoirs are often the only solution for effective flood protection. In Germany about some hundreds of flood control reservoirs are in operation. When there is no additional utilisation, e. g. recreation area, the reservoirs are nowadays mainly realised as dry reservoirs. The reservoir generally divides the stream into two ecosystems. In order to meet the actual required safety standards for flood control reservoirs, preference is increasingly given to the safety standards and the evaluation of the reliability of such hydraulic structures. An overview of the technical standards and legal regulations of the reliability of flood control reservoirs in Germany is given with respect to the planning, construction, maintenance and operation of dams. The most problems of evaluation of the reliability are less in the principal hydraulic structures and stability analysis than in the agreement concerning safety standards and operational demands of a flood control reservoir between operator, authorities and committee of experts. First experiences in preparation of10-yearly safety reports for two typical flood control reservoirs in Germany are presented.
