Abstract: A model for prediction of natural temperature variations in reservoirs of run-of-river hydro powerplants (HPPs) has been developed and verified. It is based on a principle of observing an element of water which moves along a stream. Along reservoirs, the shape of such an element is transformed and its temperature changes due to short wave global radiation, long wave radiations of sky and of a water body, evaporation and convection. The model was verified with measured data from the existing Vrhovo reservoir and additionally controlled by comparison with results of a 3D model. It is best suited for simulations of a chain of successive runof-river HPPs when our primary interest is determination of an average temperature rise along the chain, without detailed daily variations.
