Abstract: Theoretical and experimental investigations are undertaken to understand the mechanism of the wind-induced circulation in a density stratified lake. An analytical solution, describing the current velocity, the wind set-up, and the interface between two layers of different densities, is obtained by means of a two-dimensional eddy viscosity concept. Under various wind conditions, the horizontal and vertical components of current velocity, the elevation of density interface, and the electric conductivity have been measured by the use of a wind flume. The theoretical result shows good agreement with test data in the whole stratified layer except the density interface region.
