Abstract: In a strait where geometric characteristics enhance vortex pairing and stretching, strong vortexes can be observed in a quite stable manner. In this paper vortex behavior in the wake of a flat plate set up perpendicular to the flow is studied by flow visualization and velocity measurements. The experiments are conducted in two boundary conditions, i. e. a rectangular channel and a rectangular channel with U-shaped shoal around the flat plate. The results show that vertical stretching of vortex is observed in the latter case, not in the former case. The results also indicate that secondary flow structure brought by the bottom configuration strongly affects the local behavior of the vortexes, especially in the developing process.
