Abstract: The interaction between longitudinal and secondary flow enhances turbulent dispersion in curved flows. The problem of dispersion in slowly meandering channels has been studied using experimental and analytical methods. Predictive relations have been proposed for the coefficient of lateral dispersion, based on laboratory and field data. Numerical models have produced good agreement between measured and predicted flow and concentration fields in slowly meandering channels. This study expands the scope of existing investigations by taking on the problem of dispersion in strongly curved flows, using refined numerical modeling and an existing detailed flow data set.
