Abstract: Open armour layers are one solution to protect gravel riverbeds against further degradation. Not covered spaces remain between larger stones placed on the riverbed (Figure 1). Systematic model tests in a special equipped flume at the Versuchsanstalt Obernach and theoretical investigations led to a simple design formula for the necessary roughness density of the placed stones to avoid the sediment transport almost totally. Another formula was derived for the necessary diameter of the stones to resist maximum flow. Besides field investigations were carried out at naturally armoured riverbeds. They are an important comparison for artificial open armour layers. The valuation shows, that the stones larger than the critical size which cannot be moved by maximum flow cover about same parts of the riverbed as the placed stones of an artificial open armour layer, which stops sediment transport almost totally.
